The talk Fast Solvers for PDE-Constrained Optimization, by Professor John Pearson (School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh), will be held on Monday May 12, 2014 at 8:30 in room K4.
Abstract of the talk
An area of much recent research in computational mathematics and applied science is that of PDE-constrained optimization. A key problem is how to build fast and robust solvers for matrix systems arising from such problems. In this talk we consider the construction of preconditioned iterative methods for such systems, exploiting their saddle point structure to develop good approximations of the (1,1)-block and Schur complement of the matrices involved. We explain how this methodology may be applied to time-independent and time-dependent problems, with a special focus on reaction-diffusion control problems from chemical and biological processes.
